VR Training

Working at Height VR Training Module. Free and open source for industry and education use (not for commercial use).

The challenge

One of the construction sectors top goals is to achieve zero harm.  We all have a responsibility and a right to create and work in a safe environment. John Holland Group (JHG) are a leader in safe working and have established 10 global mandatory requirements (GMR’s) that all staff must learn before working on site. As part of their ongoing commitment to this goal JHG wanted to do more and approached Spatial Media to create an innovative approach to learning these GMR’s using Virtual Reality (VR). The challenge was to take one of the GMR’s – Working at Heights and creating an immersive VR training module.

Our solution

Spatial Media’s solution was to create a VR training module to meet the requirements of JHG's working at heights GMR. There are 5 sub-modules to complete within the training session:

1. Introduction

2. Laydown Yard

3. ElevatedWork Platform (EWP)

4. Penetration

5. Scaffolding

Each sub module takes around 4-5minutes to complete. Before students start the training there is an introduction in the virtual site office where students can practice using the VR controls and interactions.

The hardware the training solution was deployed on was the ViveFocus 3

JHG and Spatial Media have made this training module open source for Industry meaning the benefits go beyond JHG and can be utilised across the industry more broadly
