Inconsistent route exposure and fragmented familiarisation processes were creating gaps in driver confidence and operational readiness. With SPADs a critical safety concern across the network, KiwiRail needed a scalable, standardised solution that could bring every driver to a consistent level of competency without relying on repeated in-person route trips.
Spatial Media delivered a high-fidelity digital training program combining in-cab video enhanced with glow lines, infrastructure labels, and signal annotations, alongside interactive scenario-based simulations testing safe working procedures, operational contingencies, and situational awareness.
Assessment is fully competency-based and integrated with KiwiRail's LMS, ensuring every driver meets a consistent standard before operating independently. Competency outcomes are tracked digitally, supporting auditable compliance, refresher notifications, and revalidation workflows.
The results have been tangible. SPADs are reduced, route knowledge and confidence are measurably improved, and training efficiency is maximised. A CEO-sponsored initiative, the Arahina Route Familiarisation Competency sets a clear benchmark for modern rail driver training and demonstrates what is possible when digital delivery, scenario-based learning, and robust compliance tracking work together.
